The history of illustration

For my first exercise I decided to choose EH Shepard. I loved wind in the willows when I was growing up and winny the poo. He was a illustrator from England London he was born on December the 1st 1879. His creativity came from both parents his mother used watercolours in her drawings. He attended St Paul's school where his uncle was the headmaster. The teachers already knew that he was good at art and he won a scholarship and continued his subjects in art. Earnest was a likable person and was nicknamed giddy kipper.

WHY DID HIS WORK SEEM OLD-FASHIONED

His work seem very old fashioned as the scenery was set in what would of been the 1930's era. It seemed very olde worldy set in a quaint English countryside. The character's where dressed in the style of clothing that would of been the style of clothing suited for the 1930's. The impression I got from wind in the willows scenery was that it had a dated quality.

What was it about the contemporary artist that attracted you to there work

The illustrator I decided to choose for my next question is a lady called Tara McPherson.
Her work first attracted me as it reminded me of my own imagination its very whimsical, bright, colourful and cosmic Full of life. EH Shepard's work seems less fanciful not as bright and colourful, whereas Tara's work is more modern and you can see it has been done by modern technology. Tara's imagination seems to go more into a strange and unusual world with ailen like pictures more futuristic with a folklore aspect to it. The wind in the willows and winny the poo is more realistic set in the country side in a English old fashioned setting.

How did each artist produce their illustrations

Eh Shepard’s illustrations use subtle colours and black ink lines to add detail over the top. Hid lines are more scratchier and create a sense of movement on the page.He also used pencil and ink his technique and drawing tools where very traditional. Shepard used watercolours in his work.
Tara McPherson on the other hand uses a variety of different mediums like oils, acrylics an modern technology.

Here are some sketches I done from EH Shepard's wind in the willows and winny the poo. I used pencil to draw the lines then a ink pen to sketch in. I then used photoshop to enhance the effect. I found sketching these picture quiet easy to draw and enjoyed it. I always loved wind in the willows and winny the poo when I was growing up. The style of drawing that I've been practicing over the years has been very similar and found it came quite naturally. Drawing these pictures was OK my only struggle at this time is being able to keep my studying in a routine and being able to describe what I am doing in writing. I am finding it a bit difficult, Taking time to research and not having the confidence to Be able to put it all together.

I then looked for another artist which was contemporary
Her name is Tara McPherson, She is a pop surrealist from America, She received a bfa in illustration with hons she exhibits her work all over the world and uses her art in books, comics, advertising and makes toys she also teaches classes and was named the Crown Princess her work is very bright and colourful.

I have never seen her work before and found it quite similar to some of my own drawing  so I decided to use her for my exercise.
She has a variety of different art and uses many different techniques.
I found trying to draw her pictures quite hard to do and had to draw a few times, Trying to mix the colours right although I found drawing winny the poo in pen ink quite easy.
Here are some pictures I done
